|The holiday season often brings many opportunities to visit with friends and family. As human beings, it is our connection with others that makes us thrive. Here are two simple ways to make someone else—and yourself—smile this month.
Science confirms it: expressing gratitude has a profoundly positive effect on both the person who receives the message and the person expressing it. So, today—not tomorrow or when you remember later—I encourage you to take the time to write a letter of gratitude to someone deserving. It doesn’t have to be a long letter. It can be just a few sentences (or even a text or call). The important thing is that you take a moment to let someone else know how they have touched your life.
Showing gratitude is a sure-fire way to put a smile on another person’s face. It might also help them recognize a positive strength in themselves that they may not have otherwise been aware of. By helping others see positive things in themselves, we give them the gift of using it more.
Never forget that one comment has the power to make a difference in someone’s day and life.
Just say thank you
It’s more than remembering your manners. Saying “thank you” is a way to acknowledge the giver, to recognize that someone took the time to think about you and then act on it. My grandmother used to get frustrated when she would give me something, or do something for me, and my response was that she “didn’t need to do that.” She taught me, instead, to accept what is offered with pride and to always thank the giver. Telling a giver their action was unnecessary only makes them second-guess future acts of kindness.
One of my favourite quotes is “when you appreciate the good, the good will appreciate itself.” Positive exchanges with others are the most inexpensive gift you can give. All it takes is a little bit of your time for you to make the difference in someone else’s life.
